Community Partners
The P.A.R.T.Y. Program works in a collaborative partnership with community relationships that are already established. Among them are MADD, Mercy Hospital, Police Department, Fire Department, Criminal Investigation Unit, Towing companies, Rehabilitation Units, Emergency Room personnel, Emergency Room Physicians, Trauma Survivors, Ambulance companies, Towing company (provides our crash car), school administrators and teachers. Each partner plays an integral role in the creation of the P.A.R.T.Y. Program.
History
The P.A.R.T.Y. Program was developed by an Emergency Nurse in
Toronto, Ontarioin 1986, through a request by teenagers in the area. Astute teens were seeing the growing number of young people, their peers, being injured and/or killed because of risk-taking behavior and suggested that there should be something to educate teens BEFORE the injury happens.
Students are empowered to recognize risk and are exposed to a line of choice between safe and dangerous. There are five things they learn to do: Buckle up, Drive sober, Wear the gear, Look first, Get trained. They are given aids to help with this through items like The Contract For Life, Friends for Life Cards, Risk Continuum and RACC(Recognize that risk exists, Assess the risk, Consider a behavior that will decrease injury and death, Consider the consequences).
One unforeseen aspect of this program was the response and effect this program has had on our Trauma Survivor Speakers. This program is the one opportunity for them to feel useful. They look forward to coming and speaking to the kids about how their lives have changed and how they have had to alter their dreams because of the injury they suffered.
